Import Export Code (IEC): how to apply online and keep it active

Updated · ImportGap guides

The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-character code from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. You need it to import machinery or raw material, or to export. It is issued online, usually the same day.

How to apply

  1. Register on the DGFT portal with a mobile number and email.
  2. Choose 'Apply for IEC' and enter business details: PAN of the firm, address, bank account and Aadhaar of the proprietor or a director.
  3. Upload a cancelled cheque or bank certificate and address proof.
  4. Pay the fee of ₹500 online and sign with Aadhaar e-sign or a digital signature.
  5. The IEC is generated online and can be downloaded immediately.

Keep it active: the yearly update

Every IEC holder must confirm or update their details on the DGFT portal between April and June every year, even if nothing changed. If you miss it, the IEC is deactivated and customs clearances stop until you update it.
